HVAC Summer Checklist

With the first day of summer just a few short weeks away, the temperature is only going to go up, meaning higher energy bills.

Here is our HVAC summer checklist to make sure your AC is humming all summer long.

Change Your Filters Dirty air filters lower your AC's performance. When you don't change your filters, it creates a blockage that leads to a system pressure drop, compromising airflow, This causes the whole system to work harder in order to reach the thermostat setting, making the parts wear out faster and consuming more energy. Plan on changing your filters at least every 90 days, or more if you have pets.

Clean the Condenser Coils Filters aren't the only ones doing the dirty work, your AC's condenser coils, located in the systems outdoor unit, become coated with dust and debris overtime. This causes the performance to drop; dirty coils can cause inefficiencies of up to 30%. Many homeowners find they can easily clean the coils themselves with a soft-bristle brush or hose.

Clearing the Condensate Drain Line The condensate drain line wrings moisture out of the interior. Without maintenance, drain lines may become clogged, forcing the collected water back inside the unit, creating leaks around the system. To prevent this, flush the drain line with a little bit of bleach—it will also kill off mold that’s beginning to grow.

Regular Maintenance Without regular maintenance, your system will become less efficient, making it have to work harder to keep your home cool. If you're not one for getting your hands dirty, having a professional maintenance package may be for you.
