Let's Discuss Filter Options!

Cleaning or replacing your HVAC filter is one of the most important elements of HVAC maintenance. It helps to maintain performance and energy efficiency, sustaining a healthy and clean home environment. Replacing a filter is an easy task for most homeowners, but with all the filter options out there, do you know the right one for your home?

Types of ratings and numbers homeowners can find for HVAC air filters:

Microns and particulate matter MERV MPR FPR HVAC air filters dimensions

Size The most common filter sizes are 16″ x 20″, 20″ x 25″ and 16″ x 25″. You can find the size you need located on the side of the door on your filter cabinet; it must be an exact fit in-order for maximum efficiency.

Thickness A filter’s thickness can range from 1″ to 5″. A thicker furnace filter will last longer and can be more efficient. Your system configuration will determine the thickness of the filter that you can use.

Microns and Particle Matter A micron is a unit of length equal to one millionth of a meter. In the case of HVAC air filters, microns are used to measure the diameter of air particulates; PM with a number signifies Particle Matter followed by the micron measurement.

MPR MPR stands for micro-particle performance rating. The MPR is expressed in number. It indicates how efficient it is at removing particles that are between 0.30 and 1.0 micron in size.

FPR FPR stands for filter performance rating. The FPR rating was developed by The Home Depot and is used for brands of HVAC air filters sold in its stores. FPR ratings are expressed in number and color.

MERV MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value and is the standard rating system used by the HVAC industry. The higher the MERV rating, the greater the efficiency in removing contaminants and pollutants; Merv 10 is typical for a normal household.
