Prepare Your Home Before Going on Vacation
Whether you’re planning on having fun under the sun for a weekend trip to the beach or taking off to visit family, prepping your HVAC system is just as important to avoid potential headaches when you return home. Here are some tips to consider prior to leaving:
Set Your Thermostat
It is not recommended to turn off Your HVAC when you leave for vacation. Increasing the temperature will still keep the unit running and help control the humidity in your home while you're away. If the unit is off completely while you're gone, the humidity will increase and not only will it be humid, it will also take longer to reach your desired cooler temperature.
Adjust Your Water Heater
If you will be gone for more than a week, turn down your water heater to "low" or "vacation" mode to help minimize heat loss and reduce your utility bills.
Protect Against Surge
Your HVAC is an electrical appliance that is vulnerable to surges and power outages. Surge protectors are inexpensive and a great way to protect your system.
Schedule Routine Maintenance
Every homeowner should have their HVAC system inspected by a professional at least once a year and there’s no better time than before you take leave for vacation. Scheduling a tune up to get your system thoroughly checked, cleaned, and lubricated will help ensure that your HVAC will be ready to keep you cool upon your arrival.
